Article assessment question

[edit]

I noticed that you created a nice assessment page for Wikiproject Houston. Is this something any wikiproject can have, or do you have to request it? (I think it would be a good idea for Wikiproject Idol Series) Tennis DyNamiTe (sign in) 02:50, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I have created the assesment page, but whaen I created this category, I noticed I had no idea what to do. May I ask your help with the cats. in my projects? And also, what database do I have to update? Tennis DyNamiTe (sign in) 03:39, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

No other city has a lengthy discussion of local politics in the introduction. This should especially not be the case when the rest of article doesn't mention it at all since the introduction should serve as a summary.--Loodog 23:14, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WatchlistBot

[edit]

I've used User:WatchlistBot to set up Wikipedia:WikiProject Dallas/Articles. I generated it from the existing list of articles which link to the template on their talk pages. The bot can also help you tag categories (by interactively traversing the category hierarchy), and tag all articles within tagged categories. Please let me know if you'd like me to help you with any of that. Otherwise, the Articles page will be updated periodically, on no set schedule. This will pick up article name changes, deletions, or articles which have manually had tags added. Ingrid 21:37, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DrumGuy8800,

you seem to be the right person to ask for a picture of the AAC in Dallas, Texas - since you seem to be 'Mr. Dallas'

If you have one, could you upload it to the Commons and release it under GDFL, CC-BY_SA or similar? Woulkd like to use it for the Dallas Stars page in the german wiki and the commons. CU

Converting me to {{convert}}

[edit]

I just reverted your additions of this template to List of largest suspension bridges. I have a couple of problems with it:

  1. You converted all the meter data to feet. For some bridges the raw information was originally in feet and converted (manually) to meters. Converting it back to feet can introduce errors. If you want to research all hundred-odd bridges to check the numbers be my guest. As the numbers are already there, and I checked their accuracy when I first added the bridges to the list, I see no need to do this.
  2. The template added scores of links to meter and feet, contrary to style guidelines which says they should only be linked on their first occurance. I think the list looks better without m and ft. links displayed as links or plain text. Perhaps you could make both choices optional, and displaying them as plain text I would think would be the default, since the link only needs to be turned on once. I would have used it if the m/ft labels were not displayed at all.
  3. You removed a link that had nothing to do with meters or feet.

Otherwise, I could see how this template can be very helpful, and will look for occasions to use it. -- Samuel Wantman 04:19, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, Of course you didn't add it, you wrote the template. But perhaps the template as it is, is not appropriate for lists. Have you considered leaving out the units entirely, and have people add them linked or not, as needed? This could be an alternate version, so people will decide which to use, instead of having to code switches. -- Samuel Wantman 08:30, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cat:Avifauna of Texas

[edit]

Hello, from the Sonoran Desert (in this case extreme SW Arizona, at Yuma, Arizona). I did a bird page for SW ariz, yuma county, area specifically, which ended up in the cat: Lower Colorado River Valley.

I did put the roadrunner in Mexioo and SW United States, as opposed to any state; It is a signature bird for Arizona, as far as tourism goes, as does the signature bird: Cactus Wren. However they would also be signature birds of the Sonoran Desert (I started that category, after someone started the Mojave Desert Cat.). For the Chihuahuan Desert cat that i started, I don't know what birds would be called signature birds. It is a higher elevation, colder desert, with birds wintering from the Midwest U.S. (the Larkspurs, etc ?). I am still learning about bird ranges. If you look at the SW Texas Avifauna, those are either in the extreme S. at Brownsville on the Rio Grande (but they are also on the Gulf and go down the Eastern Side of Mexico). The SW Texas birds go up the Rio Grande Valley, and some into the inland regions of the Chihuahuan desert, and/or states of NE Mexico.

I just started an avifauna for Northeast Mexico, breaking it out of the Fauna of Northeast Mexico, a lot of snakes, lizards, etc. I have started breaking up the areas of mexico to include: birds of the Madrean sky islands, and just lately: birds of the mountain range (West): Birds of Sierra Madre Occidental.

This has all been a progression. Since Texas has an Avifauna of North Texas for some plains species, and is BIIIGGGG Texas, with trees in the East vs the entire State, (I also started fauna of east TExas) to go with the Forests of East Texas. I suggest you put the "Greater Roadrunner" in Avifauna of Texas, that way it covers all the regions that it may be in. I assume that farther east, and farther north the bird becomes more scarce. Thanx for asking. I am NOT an expert, but I am studying and learning. Andd... I just bit off doing the Caribbean stuff after going down thru C. America, and doing a lot of the S. America stuff (Trees were under Flora, Birds of S. America were under Fauna). So thanx for asking me, and sorry for a lengthy discourse for an answer. Dallas Map

[edit]

Nice work on the new Image:Texas map - Dallas.svg! It's much more detailed and useful than the old dot map. But I have one question -- Lake Ray Hubbard is actually part of Dallas. Should we include it in the map, or make the outline of the lake in blue or something of the sort? Also, how did you make the map? Many cities in the surrounding area can make use of your technique, including Fort Worth, Denton, Plano, Garland, Mesquite, etc. --Stallions2010 18:55, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What is considered linkspam?

[edit]

Hi drumguy,

I have a lot of good content on my site at http://www.buyandselldallas.com that is very useful for anyone in Dallas, Texas. My site includes city profile information, links to local city homepages, school district information, forums, blogs, news, local maps, restaurants, shopping, entertainment. I've been working on my site for several years. I also have several links leading my users(averaging 2000-3000 per month) directly into this dallas info page, such as http://www.buyandselldallas.com/downtown.htm.

Contact

[edit]

Thanks for getting back with me so quikly and for posting link back. I appreciate all the information and would love some assistance on my site. Have many issues I'm trying to work through. I majored in Business/Marketing, and minored in Real Estate at Texas Tech and University of NT. I took many programming classes including visual basic, cobal, C++ but ended up changing majors and decided to take a different path. Thus I lack the expertise to implement some of the changes I would like to make on web. I also have several other sites I'm trying to work on(http://www.dfwurbanrealty.com, http://www.searchdallasmls.com, http://www.dallasrealogy.com, http://www.dfwhighrise.com) but lack funds, time and energy to complete. How do I contact you directly? btw, you have done a great job with gathering and organizing information here on Wikipedia Dallas. I have worked in real estate for last 15 years and I'm very familiar with just about every neighborhood and street in Dallas. Information here is very accurate and easy to access. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kc412o0yz (talkcontribs) 07:01, 30 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Will & Grace - building name.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Will & Grace - building name.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Frontage Roads

[edit]

I thought it would be a good idea to include at least something about Frontage Roads in the Dallas article since all of our highways use them and many people from other areas of the country don't know what they are. Is there a particular reason why this information has been omitted from both Dallas, Texas and Transportation in Dallas, Texas? -- RedPoptarts 09:21, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(In response to your post on my talk page)Unfortunately I don't know enough about the downtown Dallas highways (I'm from originally from Denton, and have moved to Trophy Club) so I won't really be able to make contributions in this area very easily.

Oh, also I have a statistic you'll probably like. I was updating the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex article, and noticed that a county had been added to the metroplex recently and was not on the list. Upon recalculating the metroplex area, I discovered that the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex's total area is greater than the states of New Jersey and Rhode Island combined! Just a nice bragging right when people stereotypically think you're from a 'small Texas town'. =) -- RedPoptarts 09:14, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Moving images to Commons

[edit]

Unfortunately, to transfer images from en to commons requires that you download the image to your computer before re-uploading to commons - this is a real pain. However, the CommonsHelper is designed to ease the process, as it makes it easier to preserve the description text. As theres only 20 images in that category, it shouldn't take you too long. Just remember to take the en images with {{NCT}} afterwards :)--Nilfanion (talk) 21:57, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Drumguy. Thanks for your nomination on the Pearl Brewery article. I know it still needs a lot of work, mainly in sections that I haven't gotten around to writing yet. However, I've tried to ensure that as I did write sections, I tried to keep the quality high and consistent. When I initially started this page I never dreamed that it'd get this far. Its not been easy though, since Clipper147 and I seem to be the old people working on it routinely. Thanks again Drumguy for the nomination. Hopefully we'll see Pearl on Wiki's front page one of these days. Cheers. --Brownings 11:38, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Geobox Mountain Range

[edit]

Of course this is possible, simply use normal wiki syntax [[points to|link text]]. The template encloses the text in the square brackets only when an article with that name exists, otherwise it prints just the text with no brackets. Thats what {{Geobox link}} does. Thanks for that info on {{Convert}}, its great and I'll probably start using it instead of my single purpose conversion template. – Caroig 19:37, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I looked it over and it appears you have addressed all of the issues. The only other thing I think should be fixed is the placement of the images. There are a lot of images in the article, and they are really clustered together at the bottom of the article. Maybe consider adding a gallery or reworking the locations of the images to space them out better. Once you address that, renominate the article at GAC. --Nehrams2020 20:05, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Math in templates

[edit]

Hello, Drumguy. I am sending you this message because you seem to be the major contributor to {{convert}}, which I use frequently. I created a template {{River drop}} to convert and display the drop of a river in feet per mile to meters per kilometer. This was my first attempt at creating a template with math functions and I am not sure I did it correctly, but at least it works. I used the template in Yakima River with {{subst}} and it worked all right for display, but it leaves the {{#expr}} in the text of the article. How can I make the template do a complete substitution, not leaving the expression in the text? Also I want to expand the template eventually to convert in the other direction, from meters to feet. I tried to use {{convert}} as an example, but it is so complex that I was not able to glean the information that I needed from it. ●DanMSTalk 20:11, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the guidance. Yes, I learned the hard way about trying to subst {{convert}}! I did it once (and once only!) and what a mess it left in the article—even though it displayed properly. If you want to add {{River drop}} to {{convert}}, go ahead. The conversion is simple: (feet per mile)/5.28 = meters per kilometer. (Meters per kilometer)*5.28 = feet per mile. Let me know when and if you add the functionality to {{convert}}. Thanks. ●DanMSTalk 20:38, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sachse, Texas

[edit]

Hey Drum,
You made some edits to Sachse, Texas and the map wasn't working so I installed a pushpin map. My question to you is how accurate is the pin? I am just trying to see how close it is and you're a Texan, so... Thanks, —MJCdetroit 17:16, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I created Image:TXMap-doton-Sachse.PNG even though its ridiculously archaic.. I'm trying to do maps like Image:Texas map - Dallas.svg with actual city limits in SVG format over at the commons. I've created one so far. ahahahaha... I'll consider finding the limits tonight and making an SVG for Sachse. Out of curiosity, how'd you come across the article? I see that you're from Detroit and you came across the image redlink less than 24 hours after it was created. -- drumguy8800 C T 17:29, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was actually looking to see how accurate that pushpin map for the USA is. I knew you edit cities around Dallas, therefore I looked at your user contributions to see if I could get your take on that pushpin map for the USA from someplace in the south. The redlink was just luck I guess, but that brings me back to my original question: how accurate is the pin for places in the south? BTW, if there is a better map—by all means use it. —MJCdetroit 18:29, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You were a tad too close to the Red River, I think.. is there another one I can look at..? One thing I'd definitely suggest though is a more attractive map, for instance.. Image:Map of USA.svg. I suppose Image:Usa-equidistant.png is being used because its an equirectangular projection but it's only accurate for north and south distances.. is that really worth it? Its almost giving me vertigo. -- drumguy8800 C T 19:37, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know. It does kinda suck. Thanks, —MJCdetroit 19:44, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if I offended you, wasn't my intent? -- drumguy8800 C T 19:46, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, not at all. I didn't make the map. I was just trying to figure out how accurate it is. I kind of view that map as a last resort type of thing. —MJCdetroit 20:29, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks, and the issue has geen resolved. I was referring to the WP:IIJ infobox, a complex piece of work which automatically switches maps according to the state. I want some changes done with the code for some more versitality, willing to help? -- PlaneMad|YakYak 10:13, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since the infobox must switch between different maps, it must also switch the boundary coordinates (top left, bottom right) point so that it displays the locator dot properly. At present there are four pages: see #3 in [1] that has the four points for a particular map. Is it possible to have them all in one page so that its is easier to edit and tweak -- PlaneMad|YakYak 10:27, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template question

[edit]

Hi, I'm currently trying to knock together a template that operates a bit like a php page, and can't work out how to do it! I wonder if you'd mind seeing if you could suggest anything?

What I want to be able to do is to link years to geological time. I use the template

{{Ma|599.9}}

to produce text like 599.9 million years ago, and I want the number to link to a second template, which produces this:

Timeline

[edit]

This timeline shows how 599.9 million years relates to the planetary timescale.

Tonian EdiacaranEoarchean PaleoproterozoicMesoproterozoicNeoproterozoicPaleozoic

HadeanArcheanProterozoicPhanerozoic
599.9 million years ago

Millions of years ago

However I only want a link to the timeline - it shouldn't be displayed in the article! So can I generate a link to a page Template:ShowMa?yearsago=599.9 that will generate the template with the specified digits? Or will I have to create a separate page for every year of Earth's long history?

Many thanks!

Verisimilus 13:25, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Solution

IE display problems

[edit]

Hi. I remember you saying on User talk:Planemad that you were good at resolving HTML/coding issues. Please see Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction/Sandbox/Sandbox. It is a sandbox (which you are welcome to edit) where I'm trying to get small (75px) map images aligned with their 1px borders. In Firefox (which I use), the borders are perfectly aligned with the maps. However, in IE, for some reason the maps are offset downwards from their borders whenever the images are sized at less than 110px. Yet I need to keep these inset maps at around 75px. Do you have any ideas? Thanks for your time. Saravask 16:02, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, that's great! Since you got all the borders to show, it really does look much better. Maybe if the background in the bordered div is shaded the color that the map's ocean is, that would make it an even better fix. Yeah, I agree about the pains of template editing; it would be much better if we could test code offline by using some downloadable testing client to display wiki syntax and update display changes automatically. Thanks for your help; I appreciate it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Saravask (talkcontribs) 21:55, 15 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Regarding lists of feeder schools

[edit]

In my opinion, using bulleted lists look neater than using commas, and the bulleted lists feel easier on the eyes.

It may be fine to use commas if there are few schools. Some high schools take students from many elementary schools, and those scenarios I prefer to use bullets. WhisperToMe 23:54, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not to be a noodge, but ...

[edit]

... why does the WP DFW template kept getting fouled up? Right now it has a lot of formatting errors and even incomplete words in it. The previous one, with the two flags, I think was more distinctive despite my earlier issue with the fact that the Dallas flag is unfamiliar even to many of us natives. :) The skylines, while distinctive at larger sizes, are fairly unrecognizable at the small sizes necessary to a template. Wish I knew formatting etc. so that I could fix things and not just gripe. Pardon my sticking my oar in, as they say.

Was pleased to see the Stanley Marcus article on the Portal:Dallas page last month; I keep trying to get around to adding material from Minding the Store (even bought my own copy at Half Price for that very purpose) but haven't had the chance. Update: Well, here's one example, though the display problems seem to be a function of adding parameters(?). Lawikitejana 01:04, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Update, Pt. 2: I noticed today that the glitch I mentioned doesn't seem to occur if the person names the template "WikiProject Dallas," only if they put "WikiProject Dallas-Fort Worth." Thought I'd mention it in case that aids in troubleshooting. Lawikitejana 03:29, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading Image:Dallas Sections back.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

Another conversion template

[edit]

I created a new template {{AcreFeetToM3}} to convert volume in acre-feet to cubic meters. I did not find this in {{convert}} or another template, so I made this new template. Hope I didn't re-invent the wheel here. ●DanMSTalk 17:30, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would be just as happy if you added the acre-feet conversion to {{convert}}. It would be nice if all conversions were contained in {{convert}}, but of course that’s not really practical. ●DanMSTalk 20:49, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dallas Map (Again)

[edit]

Hi Drumguy. In January, I posted a comment on your page entitled "Dallas Map," the thirty-fifth comment on this specific talk page. I had forgotten all about it until recently. The comment was posted five months ago, and I am still awaiting a reply. Should Lake Ray Hubbard be included on the Dallas map? Keep in mind that the lake is technically in Dallas city limits, and the Dallas page claims that Dallas city limits extend into Collin, Rockwall, and Kaufman counties; all, except for a small portion of Collin, of these claims are based on the fact that Lake Ray Hubbard is part of Dallas proper. The map should reflect this fact. Also, out of curiosity, how was this map created? It is excellent and accurately sets the boundaries for Dallas, with the exception of Lake Ray Hubbard. We could use your technique for other North Texas cities -- it is much better than the current dot-map system. Thanks for your help! --Stallions2010 23:08, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dallas article/photos

[edit]

Hi. Please do not delete my photographs anymore. I don't see what is so "low quality" about my photo of the Dallas skyline (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a3/DallasSkyline1.png) in the Dallas article that it warrants your deletion. I can understand if you think that it's not placed in a suitable location on the page (i.e. under the wrong category/subtitle), but then I would ask that you kindly move the image to a place on the page where it would be suitable. How would you feel if I deleted your images? Some of the ones you've taken aren't so "high quality," either. I went out on a rainy day, parked my car at a playground in Oak Cliff, climbed over a flood levee full of knee-high grass, and walked over sharp plants in the Trinity River floodplain in my flip-flops just to take some photos of the Dallas skyline, including the one I posted in the article. Then I went home and did a lot of editing to make it brighter. I'm guessing you're someone who frequents the Dallas-Fort Worth Urban Forum (http://forum.dallasmetropolis.com). Give a brother some love. If you would like to edit my photo so that it looks better, feel free to do so...but simply deleting it is a no-no. Have a great day. Talk 01:26, 2 June 2007 (CST)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Baumer.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Baumer.png. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Coredesat 06:48, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Explain your advice

[edit]

Drumguy8800, as creator of Image:kochsim.gif I suppose you are addressing me with your advice here: "You should ask someone who's experienced with POV-Ray to redo this image.. it could be made rather interesting." I shall listen carefully if you will please explain what you are talking about.Cuddlyable3 08:14, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(No answer from Drumguy8800)? Drumguy8800 I find your failure to give me any answer strange behaviour, since you feel free to tell me what I "should" do. That leaves me with disatisfaction about your attitude which seems quite irresponsible. Why do you think ray tracing which is a method for rendering 3-D scenes has any relevance to showing a 2-D object such as the Koch curve? With nothing from you to suggest otherwise (I am still waiting) it seems that you have merely handed out bad advice, perhaps through ignorance and/or a mindless desire for the kind of "eye candy" images that ray tracing can produce. Cuddlyable3 08:09, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Thank you Drumguy8800 for your later reply below. Discussion kept to this your page.) The Koch curve you're showing is in fact not a 2D image, but a 3D image, as there is an x and y dimension to the curve, and you are zooming in (along the Z axis) repeatedly. There may be no tilt or pivot to the camera, but the image is most definitely a 2D representation of a 3D phenomena. I have not responded because I've been busy. Using raytracing will be specifically for eye-candy, making it look better. Your image failed as an FPC because it was not attractive enough. Make it visually stunning with raytracing and it can pass. And don't be rude. -- drumguy8800 C T 15:33, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Drumguy8800 you are wrong if you think the Koch curve is anything other than a 2-D object. I zoomed the view to illustrate the object's property of self_similarity, and that is the purpose of the illustration for Wikipedia. The view is panned to achieve a seamless repetition, simulating an infinite zoom. If you wish to regard the zoom as a 3rd or "Z" dimension and think that can make pleasing eye-candy then I suggest you get to work on that. I do suggest that you check what has already been [done]. My goals do not include winning any FPC "stunning attractiveness" contest, nor responding to your advice that I find to be gratuitous and arrogant. Cuddlyable3 07:35, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How to start an article for Lover's Lane

[edit]

We very much need an article for the redlink Lover's Lane, Dallas, Texas, as it is linked to by various articles but doesn't yet exist. I started to create it, but really couldn't think how to start. Ideas? A person you'd suggest to ask? I already double checked to make sure it doesn't exist under another name (as Bluffview, Dallas, Texas turned out to do — it was under "Bluff View, Dallas, Texas"). Lawikitejana 18:00, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I read the deletion discussion and it gave me an idea — if references could be found, what about a single article on various notable streets of Dallas? (Midway, Lover's, etc.) Then the dead links could be turned into redirects. For example, I can find references in DMN to Lover's Lane as we know it at least as far back as the 1930s, and Midway dates back about that far, but there isn't necessarily enough for an article each. It might save some trouble if there were one article to which all such items directed. Lawikitejana 03:55, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:PocatelloIdahoFlag.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:PocatelloIdahoFlag.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BigrTex 22:21, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

... on the changes to Forest Avenue High School (Madison HS). I've been using those databases I mentioned that let you look up old articles in the DMN and other papers. That stuff about changing the name because it became a "Negro school" just blew me away. The garbage people have done over the whole race thing, it's just bizarre. I called my mom to find out if she remembers that, as she lived here in the '50s, and she says that she doesn't remember that incident and finds it astonishing even after having lived through the whole period. As a longtime Stanley Marcus fan, I wonder whether he was aware of the whole shebang (as an alumnus of FAHS) — it's hard to imagine how he would've missed it, but it's also hard to imagine his ignoring it, given his political convictions on civil rights.

Infobox Hospitals

[edit]

Hi, good to see someone adding Template:Infobox Hospital templates to US hospital articles :-) Template is I agree quite complex as it allows for use across many countries' systems; template was developed with help of many editors from a number of countries. But I'm always keen to hear where the template instructions should/could be improved. Couple of pointers for now:

  • Country uses 2-letter codes, hence "US" rather than "USA"
  • State, if this is defined (term is automatically wikilinked) then the template automatically gives a link to [[List of hospitals in <State>]]
  • Region &/or Location parameters may be used to give extra address details (Location parameter takes free text, ie one may define wikilinks and alternative display text as you have correctly done, whilst Region is automatically wikilinked). These give widest flexibility to editors to give street & area names, as well as linking to cities or county areas.
  • Type may be set to Community, General (District General in UK), Teaching or Specialist. The Speciality parameter then is used to state which specialities if "Type=Specialist" or "Type=Teaching"
  • Infobox provides hospital homepage link, so this does not need be duplicated as an External Link.
  • HealthCare is meant to indicate distinction between private fee-paying and public free-to-patient care as per choice present in UK, Canada, Australia etc. Whilst I (just about) grasp the basics of US Medicare system, as far as I can understand, most hospitals in US would count as "private" (with Medicare paying the fee on behalf of patients when required). The template's description of options for US is therefore I suspect wrong and should basically indicate that in most cases US hospitals will have "HealthCare=Private". I would be grateful for any clarrification on this :-)David Ruben Talk 20:35, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of major streets in Dallas, Texas

[edit]

You may recall some discussion on my Talk page (and maybe here, too) last year about the possibility of creating a single article discussing the main town streets that don't deserve their own article. I've made a tiny start on that here. However, I still have the problem that even though I can find a lot of mentions of the streets, their history per se is not discussed, making it original research. What to do? What to do? Incidentally, I have at least 14 articles from DMN in which Lovers Lane is the subject of the article (though not the history of the street — e.g., I have articles about it being paved, articles in which it's mentioned as early as 1931 as the boundary of a property, a 1923 article in which it was the site of a murder, and a couple about zoning in which it's mentioned as having been a thoroughfare for years). I even have one from WW II in which a person was responding to one letter-writer's argument that paving it would just make a perfect route for the Japanese to use to invade (!) while the rebutting argument is that it led to two major airfields and therefore was an ideal route for our own military. Speedy deletion of Image:White Rock Lake 2.jpg

Sorry, didn't realise that it was a year ago that you edited the template. I'll take it to the village pump instead.-Mr Adequate (talk) 02:36, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Use of image

I am producing a documentary film about agricultural industrialization. I would love to use this image on our TAKE ACTION page where we speak about farmers markets and their benefits to a sustainable world.

www.affectedmovie.com/trailer.html is the tariler.

I am redesigning the website entirely and it will launch this week. Let me know! Thanks

next=Terminal goes to Terminal Station which is a film!!! It should perhaps go to Train station#Terminus

I really like you map of the West End in downtown Dallas. I'd like to use it in a presentation and am requesting your permissions to do so. Since I need it in the next ten minutes or so, I doubt we'll turn this around quick enough. If not, it looks great and next time I'll try to get more lead time.

Your monobook needs to be updated to avoid an error

[edit]

Hi,

Your monobook needs to be updated to avoid an error. The convert template code has changed and it will no longer accept 'sq' or 'cu' with metric units. Thus '|sqkm|' will have to be changed to '|km2|'. All existing pages have been updated. Any new use of the template with '|sqkm|' will produce an error on the page. The code for non-metric units is unchanged and can be either '|sqft|' or '|ft2|' format.

For example:

  • {{convert|$2|sqft|sqm}}

should be changed to

  • {{convert|$2|sqft|m2}}

If you want more advice, please ask at Template talk:Convert. Or ask me, I would be glad to help you update your monobook code. Regards Lightmouse (talk) 09:35, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Top-importance Dallas articles, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Top-importance Dallas articles has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Top-importance Dallas articles, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Dallasmap_downtown_freeway_loop.svg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Chris G Bot (talk) 09:23, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Downtown Neighborhoods

[edit]

Hi, I've been updating a bunch of articles on downtown dallas including buildings and neighborhoods. I live downtown in an old loft and I'm involved in a lot of the downtown resident issues.

The maps you created for the downtown neighborhoods are soon going to be out of date when the DART Green Line opens next month. Are you in the process of updating them? Also, there are a few downtown neighborhoods that are not listed: Trinity/Design District, Baylor/Meadows and Fair Park (neighborhood, not the actual park). The DowntownDallas organization now considers neighborhoods both inside and outside of the loop part of the official downtown for Dallas. The Downtown Dallas article needs to reflect this (it can still list neighborhoods as "inside the loop" and "outside the loop". Here's the official map: http://www.yourdspot.com/docs/InsideMap.pdf

Do you need help updating the neighborhood maps/articles? Dfwcre8tive (talk) 21:03, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors wanted in Bozeman, Montana

[edit]

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you're listed as a member of WikiProject Montana. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at Montana State University - Bozeman, which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. The role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

I know Montana is a big state, but if you happen to live near Bozeman and you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone else from Bozeman who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 21:33, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to pull WikiProject Wyoming under WikiProject United States

[edit]

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Wyoming, to which you are a member, may be inactive or semi active and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there have not been any active discussions on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. The article Downtown freeway loop (Dallas) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable and known by this name. Most of the google hits are to roadgeek websites, Wikipedia mirrors or roadgeek-generated videos. Fails WP:GNG

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Permission to use Dallas Skyline Photo?

[edit]

Derek,

My name is Marc Sandhu and I'm heading up the social media section of the Dallas Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). I was looking for a good cover photo that showcases the Dallas skyline and came across your wonderful image on Wikipedia.

ASCE is a non-profit that helps promote Civil Engineering.

I was wondering if it would be okay to use your photo as our Facebook Cover Photo. I've placed the photo there now to show you what it would look like in the context of the page: https://www.facebook.com/ASCEdallas

We have not advertised the page yet, so the only people who have seen it are people I've asked to approve and check the content. If you don't approve of our use I will happily take it down and find another photo before any advertising is done.

Thanks for considering!

Hello. Which park did you take those pictures in? There are several parks in Highland Park, Dallas. I am not.Zigzig20s (talk) 03:01, 28 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The article W Dallas Victory Hotel and Residences has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of notability

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. 2019 US Banknote Contest

[edit]
US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here
